The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has dismissed recent media reports suggesting the removal of Jason Gillespie from his coaching roles. The board confirmed that Gillespie will continue as the red-ball coach for Pakistan’s upcoming two-match Test series against South Africa, as previously announced.
Gillespie, who is also serving as the interim head coach for the white-ball format, has been a key figure in the team’s coaching setup. The PCB clarified that reports claiming his replacement with Aqib Javed across all formats are baseless.
Meanwhile, sources indicate that Aqib Javed is under consideration for the position of head coach for Pakistan’s white-ball team. Currently a member of the PCB’s selection committee, Javed has emerged as a strong candidate due to his extensive coaching experience, including successful tenures with domestic teams and in franchise cricket.
The upcoming white-ball series against Zimbabwe, consisting of three ODIs and three T20Is scheduled from November 24 to December 5, could potentially mark Javed’s first assignment if appointed. Given the packed schedule for the white-ball team, the PCB is expected to make a decision soon regarding the coaching role.
This development follows Gary Kirsten’s unexpected resignation as head coach just days before Pakistan’s tour of Australia. In response, Gillespie was brought in on an interim basis to manage the team during the tour. While Gillespie has effectively handled the interim role, he has shown no interest in taking on a permanent white-ball coaching position, citing personal reasons and a desire to spend more time with his family.
The PCB’s confirmation ensures stability in the immediate future of the red-ball team while the search for a permanent white-ball coach continues. The cricketing fraternity remains attentive to the board’s final decision, as it will shape Pakistan’s approach in the upcoming international assignments.
