Lahore, May 19, 2024 – The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has voiced its disappointment over recent remarks made by former PCB Chairman Khalid Mahmood concerning the national cricket team.
Mahmood’s comments were made during an interview with Express News television, where he criticized the team’s prospects ahead of their upcoming matches.
These remarks have come at a sensitive time as Pakistan’s national side is gearing up to face T20 world champions England, leading into the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024.
“At a time when the entire nation is rallying behind the national men’s team, Mr Khalid Mahmood, who served as PCB Chairman 25 years ago, has made irresponsible comments aimed at seeking attention,” the PCB stated. “His remarks are disheartening, disrespectful, and demotivating, clearly lacking in cricketing insight and knowledge.”
Mahmood’s predictions about Pakistan’s chances in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 have been met with particular dismay. He suggested that the national side had no realistic chance of success, a statement that the PCB finds baseless and dismissive of the hard work and progress made by the team.
“By outrightly predicting that the national side has no chances in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 without any cricketing basis, Mr Khalid Mahmood has overlooked the significant progress and preparation made by our players and coaching staff, as well as the potential for new talents to emerge and make a substantial impact,” the PCB continued.
The PCB emphasized the importance of unity and support from all sectors, especially from those who have previously held influential positions within the organization. “Such comments from a former PCB Chairman are discouraging for our players and disrespectful to those who have faith in their capabilities and are prepared to support them throughout this journey,” the statement read.
The Board further stressed that Mahmood, given his former role, should be more encouraging and supportive of the national team rather than making “factually incorrect, ill-informed, and potentially aimed at creating a feeling of doom and gloom” comments.
As Pakistan prepares for the T20 series against England and the subsequent World Cup, the PCB’s focus remains on fostering a positive environment that motivates and uplifts the players. The Board is committed to ensuring that the team receives the best possible preparation and support as they compete on the world stage.
The cricketing community in Pakistan continues to rally behind the team, looking forward to their performance with optimism and pride.
