PCDMA criticizes K-Electric over extended power outages in Jodia Bazar

Karachi, December 2, 2025 – The Pakistan Chemicals & Dyes Merchants Association (PCDMA) has strongly condemned K-Electric for prolonged and repeated power outages in Jodia Bazar, Karachi’s largest wholesale market and a crucial hub of the country’s commercial activities.

In a statement released on Tuesday, PCDMA highlighted that business operations in the market have come to a near standstill due to hours-long electricity cuts, severely disrupting trade. Traders warned that if uninterrupted power is not restored promptly, the economic consequences could affect not only local commerce but also Pakistan’s national economy.

The association sent a strongly worded letter to K-Electric, stating that continuous load shedding has caused billions in losses and hampered the Federal Board of Revenue’s (FBR) digitalization initiatives. PCDMA Chairman Salim Valimuhammad noted that erratic electricity has made it impossible for traders to meet mandatory obligations, including sales tax e-returns, income tax filings, and e-invoicing.

“From inventory management to FBR’s digital platforms, nothing is operational. Essential office work has become almost impossible,” Valimuhammad said, emphasizing that Jodia Bazar is one of the highest revenue-generating markets for the government. Traders are now forced to cancel transactions or depend on expensive backup generators, with no resolution despite repeated communications with K-Electric.

According to PCDMA, Jodia Bazar faces four daily power outages during peak business hours: 9:35am–11:05am, 1:35pm–3:05pm, 5:05pm–6:35pm, and 8:35pm–10:05pm. The frequent interruptions leave no uninterrupted window for commercial activity, crippling trade and undermining confidence in one of Pakistan’s most vital wholesale markets.
