England’s white-ball cricket team has been dealt a blow ahead of the much-anticipated T20I series against Australia, as captain Jos Buttler has been sidelined due to a right calf injury.
Buttler, one of England’s most experienced and impactful players, will miss the entire three-match series, which is set to kick off on September 11, 2024. His absence leaves a leadership gap, as well as a key spot in the playing XI.
In response to Buttler’s injury, England has named Phil Salt as the captain for the series. At 28, Salt is considered one of England’s brightest talents in the T20 format.
Known for his aggressive batting, Salt has already accumulated 885 runs in 31 T20 internationals, boasting an impressive strike rate of 165.11.
His fearless approach to batting is expected to translate into his leadership, bringing a dynamic edge to the team as they take on the Australian side.
To strengthen the squad further, all-rounder Jamie Overton has been called in as a replacement for Buttler. Overton’s inclusion adds depth to the team with his ability to contribute with both bat and ball.
Additionally, Jordan Cox has been drafted into England’s ODI squad as a backup batter, ensuring the team has ample cover as they prepare for a busy schedule.
Australia, meanwhile, is coming into the series on the back of a commanding performance against Scotland, where they secured a record-breaking victory in Edinburgh.
Before facing England, Australia will complete two more T20I matches against Scotland, keeping them in good form ahead of the showdown. The three-match T20I series will begin at the Ageas Bowl in Southampton, followed by the second match in Cardiff on September 13, and concluding in Manchester on September 15.
England’s squad for the series includes a mix of established stars and promising youngsters, such as Jofra Archer, Sam Curran, and Liam Livingstone, all of whom will be pivotal in countering Australia’s challenge.
With Phil Salt now leading the charge, England will be eager to maintain their momentum and deliver a strong performance despite the absence of their regular captain.
