PM committee moves to curb petroleum hoarding amid global energy turmoil

Petroleum Prices in Pakistan increase decrease

Islamabad, March 4, 2026 – A high-level committee formed by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday underscored the urgent need to prevent hoarding of petroleum products amid ongoing regional tensions and global energy market volatility.

The meeting, chaired by Finance Minister Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb, reviewed the overall availability of petroleum products across Pakistan and assessed preparedness measures to ensure uninterrupted supply.

Government Prioritizes Petroleum Supply Stability

Addressing the meeting, the finance minister emphasized that maintaining uninterrupted availability of petroleum products remains the government’s top priority. He reiterated that the committee is monitoring developments daily and stands ready to take timely and coordinated actions to safeguard national energy security and stabilize domestic markets.

The committee conducted a comprehensive review of national stock levels of crude oil and refined products, including petrol, diesel, aviation fuel, and LPG. Officials briefed participants on days of cover, daily consumption trends, and supply chain operations across the country.

Vigilance Against Hoarding and Smuggling

Amid a volatile global energy environment, the committee stressed the importance of preventing hoarding, diversion, and smuggling of petroleum products. Authorities have been directed to enhance surveillance and strengthen coordination with provincial governments to protect domestic supplies.

The meeting also examined international oil market trends, including fluctuations in benchmark prices, freight and insurance costs, shipping routes, and conditions in key maritime corridors. Particular attention was given to uncertainties surrounding the Strait of Hormuz and its potential impact on global energy trade.

LNG, LPG Supplies Under Close Watch

Participants reviewed developments in LNG and LPG markets. While LNG imports under long-term agreements remain a key component of Pakistan’s energy mix, the committee noted that disruptions in regional shipping routes could affect global LNG logistics. Cross-border LPG inflows are also being closely monitored to ensure uninterrupted domestic availability.

Contingency Planning and Alternative Sourcing

The committee discussed contingency measures, including engagement with international partners and exploration of alternative supply routes. Efforts are underway to diversify procurement options through regional energy hubs, including potential arrangements via ports in the Red Sea and Gulf region, to ensure refinery operations continue smoothly.

Energy conservation measures were also reviewed as part of broader contingency planning to manage demand efficiently while maintaining market stability. The committee emphasized prudent energy usage to enhance national preparedness if global uncertainties persist.

It was decided that chief secretaries of all provinces will join Thursday’s session to finalize a comprehensive national action plan. The strategy aims to strengthen supply security and ensure coordinated implementation across federal and provincial levels.

The meeting was attended by Minister for Petroleum Ali Pervaiz Malik, Minister for National Food Security and Research Rana Tanveer Hussain, Minister for Power Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari, Minister of State for Finance Bilal Azhar Kayani, along with senior federal officials and regulatory authorities.
