Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif

Islamabad – Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday announced the formation of a committee to review and deliberate on new designs for Pakistan’s currency notes. The decision was made during a federal cabinet meeting at the Prime Minister’s House, which focused on key policy matters, including currency modernization, a news release from the Prime Minister’s Office stated.

The Ministry of Finance briefed the cabinet on the State Bank of Pakistan’s initiative to introduce redesigned banknotes in Rs100, Rs500, Rs1,000, and Rs5,000 denominations. International experts have been engaged to ensure the new designs meet modern standards. The proposed notes will feature enhanced security threads, advanced anti-counterfeit measures, and visuals reflecting Pakistan’s cultural, historical, and regional diversity. They will also highlight important social themes, including women’s contributions to national development and environmental awareness.

To guide the redesign process, the cabinet approved the creation of a dedicated cabinet committee for further review and discussion of the proposed currency notes.

During the meeting, the cabinet also reviewed the draft Private Hajj Policy 2027–2030 from the Ministry of Religious Affairs and Interfaith Harmony, relating to registration and oversight of private Hajj operators. Based on members’ feedback, the draft was referred to the Hajj Policy Committee for further consideration.

Additionally, the cabinet ratified decisions from the Cabinet Committee on Energy (December 24, 2025) and the Economic Coordination Committee (December 23, 2025), reaffirming ongoing policy directions in energy and economic coordination.
