BÜRGENSTOCK: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has praised the Iranian leadership for its “restraint and dignity” in handling the ongoing regional crisis, expressing optimism that diplomatic efforts between the United States and Iran will lead to meaningful de-escalation and lasting peace.

Speaking to media on the sidelines of high-level talks in Switzerland, the prime minister reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to supporting dialogue, reducing tensions and promoting stability across the region.

Pakistan’s role in mediation efforts

PM Shehbaz highlighted Pakistan’s involvement alongside Qatar in facilitating diplomatic engagement between Washington and Tehran, aimed at reducing hostilities and encouraging constructive negotiations.

He said the current situation presents an important opportunity for regional and global stakeholders to advance cooperation and avoid further escalation.

Praise for Iranian leadership

The prime minister specifically commended Iranian leaders, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, President Masoud Pezeshkian and Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, for their approach to managing tensions.

“They have handled this entire crisis with a sense of dignity and have shown a genuine desire to de-escalate tensions,” he said, adding that he remained hopeful for sustained diplomatic progress.

Call for dialogue and stability

Reiterating Pakistan’s foreign policy stance, the prime minister stressed that dialogue remains the only viable path to resolving conflicts and ensuring long-term peace in the region.

Remarks on US relations

During his media interaction, Sharif also acknowledged efforts by Donald Trump to promote peace and strengthen relations with Pakistan, describing him as a “man of peace.”

He further welcomed supportive remarks from US Vice President JD Vance regarding Pakistan, calling them encouraging for future bilateral ties.

The prime minister said stronger Pakistan-US relations would help enhance economic cooperation, counterterrorism coordination and regional stability.

PM Shehbaz emphasised that improved engagement between Pakistan and the United States would benefit not only both countries but also contribute to broader peace and prosperity across the region.

He reiterated that Pakistan remains committed to playing a constructive diplomatic role in supporting conflict resolution and fostering stability through dialogue rather than confrontation.
