Lamine Yamal opens scoring as Mikel Oyarzabal brace powers Spain to commanding Group H victory
Spain national football team produced a commanding performance to defeat Saudi Arabia national football team 4-0 in their World Cup Group H clash, bouncing back strongly after a slow start to their tournament campaign.
Inspired by teenage sensation Lamine Yamal, Spain controlled proceedings from the opening minutes and showcased their attacking quality in a dominant first-half display.
Yamal sparks early breakthrough
Spain opened the scoring in the 10th minute when Yamal finished a well-worked move, sliding in at the back post after a precise delivery into the box. The goal marked his first World Cup strike and set the tone for a one-sided contest.
The young winger caused constant problems for the Saudi defence with his pace, movement and creativity, earning loud applause from supporters each time he touched the ball.
Oyarzabal double restores confidence
Forward Mikel Oyarzabal delivered a standout performance, scoring twice in quick succession to put the game beyond Saudi Arabia before half-time.
His first came after a well-constructed set-piece move, while his second showcased sharp positioning inside the box following excellent link-up play involving Dani Olmo and Marc Cucurella.
Oyarzabal, who had faced criticism after a quiet opening match, responded emphatically with a clinical display that underlined his importance to the squad.
Spain dominate across the pitch
Under the guidance of coach Luis de la Fuente, Spain found their rhythm after an underwhelming start to the tournament, combining fluid passing with relentless attacking pressure.
After the break, an own goal added a fourth when Saudi pressure collapsed under sustained Spanish attacks. Pedro Porro and Aymeric Laporte were also involved in Spain’s creative build-up play, while Spain’s defence remained largely untroubled.
Saudi Arabia struggle to respond
Saudi Arabia national football team struggled to contain Spain’s movement and were repeatedly stretched across the pitch. Despite occasional counter-attacks, they failed to test the Spanish goalkeeper with any consistency.
The result leaves Saudi Arabia with just one point from two matches, while Spain move to four points and strengthen their position in Group H.
Yamal and Oyarzabal reflect on victory
After the match, Yamal described scoring at the World Cup as a “dream come true,” highlighting the emotional moment of doing so in front of his family.
Oyarzabal, meanwhile, emphasised unity within the squad, stating that external criticism had no impact on the team’s focus and that belief inside the camp remained strong.
Spain now turn their attention to their final group-stage fixtures, with momentum clearly shifting back in their favour after a commanding and confident display.
