PM Shehbaz on Independence Day

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz on Saturday unveiled a Rs 20 billion Ramadan relief package designed to support four million deserving families across Pakistan.

Addressing the launching ceremony, Shehbaz emphasized that the package aims to benefit around 20 million individuals and will be disbursed within the first ten days of Ramadan.

Under this initiative, each eligible family will receive Rs 5,000 through digital wallets, ensuring a seamless and transparent transfer mechanism. Expressing satisfaction over the economic improvements in 2025, Shehbaz highlighted that inflation during Ramadan has been significantly lower compared to previous years. He noted that the relief allocation had increased from Rs 7 billion last year to Rs 20 billion this year, demonstrating the government’s commitment to easing financial burdens during the holy month.

The prime minister extended appreciation to all relevant authorities, including the Ministry of Finance, the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP), the National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra), the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP), and private tech firms for their collaborative efforts in implementing a robust digital distribution system. This Ramadan initiative, he stated, would ensure equitable access to financial aid nationwide.

Additionally, Shehbaz acknowledged the contributions of foreign partners who have supported this noble cause, reinforcing the importance of global cooperation in welfare projects. He also expressed concern over Rs 500 billion worth of public funds entangled in litigation and reiterated his government’s resolve to expedite legal proceedings to recover these assets.

The prime minister reiterated his government’s firm stance against corruption, particularly in the banking sector, where financial institutions had previously exploited exchange rate fluctuations for undue profits. He cited a recent Sindh High Court ruling that led to the recovery of Rs 23 billion, reflecting the government’s efforts in financial accountability.

Regarding the Utility Stores Corporation, Shehbaz described its corruption as one of the worst cases and confirmed plans for its privatization to enhance efficiency and transparency. He further vowed to shut down other loss-making government entities, ensuring better fiscal management.

Minister for Industries and Production Rana Tanveer Hussain, also present at the event, remarked that the relief program was meticulously planned within just 20 days. He assured that the Ramadan package would be distributed through a foolproof mechanism, guaranteeing swift and efficient fund transfers to all four million beneficiaries.

Moreover, as part of the relief efforts, 600 stalls are being set up at the tehsil level to provide sugar at a subsidized rate of Rs 130 per kilogram. These efforts reflect the government’s dedication to ensuring economic stability and food security during the blessed month of Ramadan.
