New York, September 24, 2025 – Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif held a key meeting with Kristalina Georgieva, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), on the sidelines of the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
During the discussion, Shehbaz appreciated the IMF’s constructive partnership with Pakistan, highlighting how the Fund’s timely assistance under various programs has supported economic stability. These included the USD 3 billion Stand-By Arrangement in FY 2024, followed by the USD 7 billion Extended Fund Facility (EFF) and the USD 1.4 billion Resilience & Sustainability Facility (RSF).
The Prime Minister stressed that Pakistan’s economy, backed by structural reforms, is showing encouraging signs of stabilization and gradual recovery. He emphasized that the IMF’s guidance has been instrumental in helping the government pursue reforms aimed at long-term growth. Shehbaz further underlined that the devastating impact of recent floods must be considered during IMF’s review of Pakistan’s progress under the program.
Ms. Georgieva expressed sympathy for those affected by the floods and acknowledged the importance of recovery-focused damage assessments. She praised Prime Minister Shehbaz for his commitment to implementing sound macroeconomic policies and reaffirmed IMF’s continued support for Pakistan as it advances critical reforms.
This high-level engagement at UNGA highlights Pakistan’s intent to deepen cooperation with global financial institutions while ensuring sustainable economic recovery.
