PM Shehbaz orders fast-tracking of Diamer Bhasha Dam project

Islamabad, June 3, 2025 — Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday emphasized the urgent need to expedite the construction of the Diamer Bhasha Dam, stating that the country’s long-term progress and self-reliance depend on affordable electricity and a strong agricultural foundation.

He issued firm instructions to remove all obstacles hindering the project and called for its early completion.

Chairing a high-level meeting focused on water resource development and energy security, the prime minister stressed that the Diamer Bhasha Dam is a critical component of Pakistan’s strategy to enhance water storage capacity, improve irrigation for agriculture, and boost hydroelectric power production. He said the completion of such mega projects was essential not only to prevent future water crises but also to ensure economic resilience.

Shehbaz underlined the importance of increasing water reserves through the timely execution of large-scale dam projects. He reiterated that Diamer Bhasha Dam holds strategic importance for energy generation and effective water management across the country. The project is expected to play a vital role in curbing seasonal flooding while supporting sustainable agricultural output.

The meeting was attended by key federal ministers, including Ahsan Iqbal, Engineer Amir Muqam, Azam Nazeer Tarar, and Moeen Wattoo, along with Adviser to the Prime Minister Rana Sanaullah and Chief Minister of Gilgit-Baltistan Gulbar Khan. Senior officials from relevant departments were also present to review the progress of the Diamer Bhasha Dam and other major water-related initiatives.

The premier directed concerned ministries and stakeholders to resolve land acquisition, logistical, and administrative hurdles delaying the project. He highlighted that the early completion of the Diamer Bhasha Dam would significantly contribute to energy security and provide a stable water supply for both domestic and agricultural needs.
