Islamabad, August 23, 2025 – Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif on Saturday directed authorities to ramp up relief and rescue operations in the flood-affected region of Ghizer, Gilgit-Baltistan, following the recent Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF).
The Prime Minister praised the swift response of rescue teams and local volunteers, who managed the timely evacuation of residents from vulnerable areas. He underscored that the safety of citizens in Ghizer must remain the top priority as more rain and potential flooding are forecast in the coming days.
Shehbaz Sharif instructed the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and the district administration to maintain round-the-clock operations, ensuring adequate provision of food, medical aid, and shelter to displaced families. He further ordered that relief efforts be intensified ahead of two upcoming weather spells to avoid any potential casualties or large-scale damage.
The Premier also announced a nationwide campaign to curb construction near rivers, streams, and natural watercourses to mitigate future disasters. “It is a national obligation to stand by our people in this hour of need,” he said, adding that rehabilitation work in Ghizer would commence immediately after rescue and relief measures were complete.
He directed NDMA to coordinate closely with provincial authorities, particularly in areas along the Indus and Sutlej rivers, including Guddu, Sukkur, and G.S. Wala, where rising water levels pose further risk.
Paying tribute to Wasiat Khan, a brave resident of Ghizer, the Prime Minister lauded his timely warning about the GLOF, which enabled authorities to evacuate people in advance and prevent loss of life. Shehbaz Sharif commended his selfless act, calling it a shining example of civic responsibility and courage.
