Islamabad, May 22, 2025 — Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday commended Hutchison Ports for its unwavering commitment and sustained engagement in Pakistan’s maritime and port development, describing it as a “powerful testament to international confidence in Pakistan’s economic vision.”
During a high-level meeting in Islamabad, Shehbaz warmly welcomed Hutchison Ports Group Managing Director and CEO, Eric Ip, acknowledging the company’s nearly 30 years of consistent investment in Pakistan’s port infrastructure. The prime minister praised Hutchison Ports for being a key strategic partner in modernizing the nation’s maritime sector, which is critical for boosting trade and economic resilience.
“Our ports are the gateway to Pakistan’s economic future,” said Shehbaz, emphasizing the need for digital transformation and infrastructure upgrades. “The active involvement of global leaders like Hutchison Ports in introducing smart port solutions, including advanced customs scanning systems, is essential to making our maritime hubs globally competitive.”
Reiterating his administration’s commitment to attracting foreign direct investment, Prime Minister Shehbaz stated that Pakistan is providing every possible facility to international investors. He noted that efforts are underway to continuously improve regulatory frameworks and investment policies, aiming to make the country a preferred destination for global capital.
Eric Ip, on behalf of Hutchison Ports, expressed strong optimism about the future of investment in Pakistan. He shared that the company is exploring further expansion at Karachi Port and other key terminals. Ip highlighted Hutchison’s intention to deploy advanced technologies and enhance cargo handling efficiency, ensuring that Pakistan’s ports are aligned with international standards.
The meeting was attended by several top government officials, including Federal Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, Economic Affairs Minister Ahad Khan Cheema, and Maritime Affairs Minister Junaid Anwar Chaudhry. Their presence underscored the strategic importance of the collaboration between the government and Hutchison Ports.
