Islamabad, March 30, 2026 – Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday reaffirmed his government’s commitment to providing relief to low- and middle-income groups amid rising fuel prices, assuring that citizens would not be left alone during the ongoing economic challenges.
Chairing a high-level meeting to review the impact of the Middle East situation on petroleum products, fuel stocks, and relief measures, the prime minister said the government was actively working to stabilize the situation while protecting vulnerable segments of society.
He emphasized that digital systems are being utilized to ensure direct and transparent delivery of subsidies and relief to the public, minimizing delays and corruption. “Every possible effort is being made to ease the burden on ordinary citizens,” he said.
As part of austerity measures, the government has significantly reduced expenditures, including slashing the development budget and grounding around 60 percent of official vehicles. According to the prime minister, these savings are being redirected toward public welfare initiatives.
He further stated that proposals to increase fuel prices have been consistently rejected, highlighting that responsible financial management and cost-cutting measures have helped the government maintain stability despite global pressures.
The meeting was informed that timely decisions by the government had prevented major disruptions in fuel supply, even amid global uncertainty caused by geopolitical tensions. Officials also confirmed that sufficient fuel reserves are currently available to meet domestic demand, with contingency arrangements in place.
Coordination with provincial governments is ongoing to expedite the registration of motorcycles and rickshaws, enabling swift relief measures for transport owners. An audit report by the Intelligence Bureau also reviewed the implementation of the government’s fuel-saving and austerity campaign, ensuring strict enforcement of cost-control policies.
Additionally, officials confirmed that adequate stocks of essential medicines are available across the country.
The meeting was attended by senior officials, including Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and other key federal ministers, reflecting the government’s unified approach to addressing economic challenges.
Experts say the government’s ongoing austerity and relief measures will play a crucial role in managing inflation and providing stability in the months ahead.
