PM Shehbaz orders major overhaul of Railways infrastructure

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif directs urgent railway track repairs, improved passenger facilities and reforms to modernise freight services.

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif has directed the Ministry of Railways to take immediate measures to improve passenger facilities and ensure the safety of train travellers across Pakistan.

The directives were issued during a meeting with Federal Minister for Railways Muhammad Hanif Abbasi, who briefed the prime minister on the ministry’s operations, development projects and ongoing reform initiatives.

PM Shehbaz stressed the need for timely maintenance and repair of railway tracks across the country, highlighting passenger safety as a key priority for the government.

The prime minister also called for a comprehensive strategy to modernise and strengthen Pakistan Railways’ freight operations. He said an efficient freight network could increase commercial revenue, improve operational performance and contribute to making the railway system more financially sustainable.

The federal minister briefed the prime minister on development schemes and reform programmes aimed at improving operational efficiency within the railway network.

During the meeting, the two sides also discussed wider administrative matters and infrastructure development.

The prime minister’s directives come as Pakistan Railways continues efforts to improve its services, upgrade infrastructure and strengthen its financial and operational performance.

The focus on freight services is also aimed at increasing the railway network’s role in transporting commercial goods, while improvements to tracks and passenger facilities are intended to provide safer and more reliable travel for commuters across the country.

The government is expected to pursue further measures under the broader reform and development agenda for Pakistan Railways.
