PM Shehbaz reveals behind-the-scenes role in Iran-US talks

ISLAMABAD, April 13, 2026 – Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said on Monday that Pakistan made extensive efforts to help resolve tensions between the United States and Iran, highlighting Islamabad’s role in facilitating dialogue and securing a temporary ceasefire.

Addressing a meeting of the federal cabinet, the prime minister expressed satisfaction over the progress made during recent negotiations, noting that Pakistan’s leadership played a key role in bringing both sides to the table after decades of strained relations.

“Our sincere efforts resulted in a ceasefire between the United States and Iran, which remains in place,” he said, adding that diplomatic engagement continues despite challenges in reaching a comprehensive agreement.

Shehbaz Sharif praised the contributions of Ishaq Dar and Asim Munir for their efforts in facilitating the dialogue process. He noted that negotiations were complex and, at times, close to collapse, underscoring the difficulty of bridging differences between the two sides.

“It is a matter of pride for the nation that Pakistan played a mediating role,” he said, adding that global leaders had acknowledged the country’s diplomatic efforts, including appreciation from Japan’s leadership.

The remarks come after nearly 24 hours of negotiations between U.S. and Iranian officials concluded in Islamabad on Sunday without a final agreement, though both sides signaled willingness to continue engagement. The talks initially took place through indirect channels before transitioning into rare face-to-face discussions, reflecting both the seriousness and sensitivity of the process.

Officials familiar with the discussions said key differences persisted on core issues, but the dialogue helped ease immediate tensions and sustain the ceasefire brokered earlier with Pakistan’s involvement.

For Islamabad, hosting the talks marked an opportunity to reassert its diplomatic relevance on the global stage, while also addressing regional stability concerns.

During the cabinet meeting, the prime minister also briefed members on his upcoming visit to Saudi Arabia, where discussions are expected to focus on evolving Middle East dynamics and future prospects for Iran–U.S. engagement.

Analysts say Pakistan’s mediation efforts could enhance its international standing, even as the outcome of future negotiations remains uncertain.
