PM Shehbaz suspends electricity bill collection in flood-hit areas

PM Shehbaz on Independence Day

Islamabad, September 13, 2025 – Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Saturday announced a significant relief step for citizens living in flood-affected regions of Pakistan.

He directed all electricity distribution companies to immediately halt the collection of August 2025 electricity bills in the calamity-hit areas, offering urgent financial breathing space to struggling families.

While chairing a high-level meeting, Shehbaz stressed that the government was committed to protecting vulnerable communities from additional hardship. He revealed that a comprehensive relief package on electricity bills would soon be finalized following ongoing consultations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). This package, according to him, will provide a long-term solution rather than just short-term relief.

The prime minister further instructed officials to ensure that bills already paid by affected consumers for the month of August would not go to waste. Instead, those payments will be adjusted against the upcoming month’s dues, guaranteeing fairness and transparency in implementation.

Reflecting on the human cost of the disaster, Shehbaz noted that the devastating floods had uprooted millions, damaging homes, livelihoods, and critical infrastructure. “We are fully aware of the immense suffering, and every possible step is being taken to ease the burden on our people,” he said.

He also assured that federal and provincial governments, in collaboration with humanitarian agencies, remain actively engaged in relief, rescue, and rehabilitation operations. Shehbaz concluded with a pledge that the government would not rest until every displaced person is safely resettled.
