Islamabad, July 28, 2025 – Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif on Monday emphasized the need for strong provincial collaboration to ensure the successful and timely implementation of the federal government’s Digital Transformation Plan.
Chairing a high-level weekly meeting on Cashless and Digital Economy, Shehbaz Sharif stated that the government is committed to accelerating the transition towards a transparent, inclusive, and efficient digital economy. He underlined that the digital transformation of Pakistan’s governance and economic systems is essential for improving public service delivery and ensuring transparency without imposing extra costs on citizens.
“The primary goal of our Digital Transformation Plan is to make public services more accessible, efficient, and cost-effective,” Shehbaz said. He added that the government has already taken major policy initiatives to promote digital payments and cashless transactions.
He instructed the federal government to conduct continuous and meaningful consultations with all provincial governments—including Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu & Kashmir—to align efforts and ensure the success of the nationwide plan. “With full cooperation from the provinces and relevant institutions, we can achieve our transformation goals within the stipulated timelines,” the prime minister asserted.
Shehbaz also emphasized that stakeholder engagement should be institutionalized as a regular feature of the digital transformation strategy.
During the meeting, officials briefed the prime minister on recent progress, including the establishment of the National Digital Commission and the Pakistan Digital Authority. The appointment of the Chairperson and Members of the authority is nearing completion.
It was also shared that the Merchant Onboarding Framework for digital services was successfully launched on July 25, 2025, marking a major milestone in building the infrastructure needed for a cashless economy.
The meeting was attended by key federal ministers, provincial chief secretaries, and other senior officials.
