PM Shehbaz vows steps to protect people and stabilize economy

PM Shehbaz on Independence Day

Lahore, March 8, 2026 — Shehbaz Sharif on Sunday reaffirmed that the government will take all necessary measures to protect public interests and maintain economic stability amid growing global uncertainties.

The prime minister made the remarks while chairing a high-level meeting in Lahore to review nationwide austerity measures and assess the country’s economic situation in light of recent international tensions, according to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office of Pakistan.

Government Monitoring Economic Situation

During the meeting, the premier stressed the importance of prudent use of national resources and said the government is closely monitoring the evolving global situation.

Shehbaz Sharif noted that timely implementation of economic measures is essential to ensure stability in the national economy.

“Once this challenging phase is over and the economy stabilizes, the government will provide maximum relief to the people,” the prime minister said.

He added that the government will continue to take all necessary decisions to maintain stability and protect citizens from the impact of global economic pressures.

Call for Austerity and Responsible Spending

The prime minister directed federal ministers, cabinet members, elected representatives, and senior government officials at both federal and provincial levels to adopt austerity and simplicity in government affairs.

He emphasized that all state officials must lead by example and ensure the effective and responsible use of public resources.

Shehbaz Sharif also highlighted that the burden of austerity should be shared fairly across society.

“The privileged and elite segments of society should set an example by embracing necessary adjustments,” he said.

Economic Risks from Global Tensions

During the briefing, officials informed the meeting that ongoing global tensions could affect Pakistan’s economy, particularly through energy supply disruptions and rising international prices.

However, the government has already taken proactive steps to mitigate potential risks and protect economic stability.

Officials also informed the meeting that the country currently has adequate reserves of diesel, petrol, and other petroleum products, and advance arrangements have been made to handle any emergency situation.

Industry and Agriculture Exempt from Austerity

The meeting clarified that austerity measures will not apply to the industry and agriculture sectors to ensure that production, exports, and food security remain unaffected.

The government aims to maintain economic activity while implementing cost-saving measures within the public sector to stabilize the national economy.
