The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has dismissed reports circulating on social media suggesting unprecedented winter weather conditions for Pakistan in the coming days. The department clarified that these claims, including predictions of record-breaking cold and snowfall in central Punjab, are entirely baseless and unverified.
Clarification on Viral Social Media Reports
According to the PMD, rumors have been spreading about extreme cold weather from January 12 to January 15, with claims of snowfall in districts of central Punjab, similar to conditions in Saudi Arabia. The PMD categorically denied these assertions, emphasizing that such phenomena are not supported by geographical or climatic conditions in the region.
Current Weather Outlook
The PMD forecast for the coming days indicates cold and dry weather for most parts of the country. While chilly conditions are typical for January, there is no indication of an extraordinary or historic cold wave. On January 11 (Saturday), light rain or drizzle accompanied by gusty winds is expected in specific areas, including Lahore, Sheikhupura, Kasur, Okara, Sahiwal, Sialkot, Narowal, Gujranwala, Bahawalnagar, Bahawalpur, and Pakpattan.
Official Stance on Weather Predictions
The PMD reiterated its commitment to providing accurate weather forecasts based on verified and reliable data. It urged the public to refrain from believing or sharing unverified weather-related information circulating on social media. These rumors, the department noted, often lead to unnecessary panic and confusion among the public.
Advisory for the Public
The PMD has strongly advised citizens to rely exclusively on its official website or other authorized sources for accurate weather updates. It also cautioned against spreading misinformation that could create fear or disrupt public trust.
“Our responsibility is to ensure public safety by sharing precise and authentic weather forecasts,” a PMD spokesperson said. “We urge everyone to ignore rumors and consult credible sources for weather updates.”
The department’s clarification serves as a reminder to trust official channels for important information and highlights the potential dangers of misinformation in times of unpredictable weather conditions. The PMD remains vigilant in monitoring and reporting any significant weather developments to ensure public safety.
