Islamabad, August 2, 2025 – The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a fresh alert, warning that monsoon rains in August 2025 are expected to be stronger and more frequent than usual. According to the PMD, various weather models suggest that many areas across Pakistan will receive above-normal monsoon rainfall this month.
The PMD explained that the monthly forecast was prepared using international weather models through a technique called the Multi-Model Ensemble (MME). Based on global patterns, such as the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) shifting into a negative phase, and the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) staying negative, Pakistan is likely to experience increased monsoon activity.
Regions expected to receive higher-than-normal rainfall include northeastern Punjab, southeastern Sindh, Kashmir, northern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, parts of Balochistan, and Gilgit-Baltistan. The rest of the country is forecasted to receive near-normal monsoon rains.
While the rainfall will help improve water levels in reservoirs and underground supplies, the PMD warned of possible risks. Isolated heavy rains could cause flash floods in mountain regions like northern Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir. Urban flooding may occur in big cities of Punjab and Sindh, while southern Punjab and Balochistan may face hill torrents.
Temperatures are expected to remain higher than normal in the mountains of northern and western Pakistan. However, areas in eastern Punjab and Sindh affected by monsoon showers may see temperatures closer to normal or slightly below.
The PMD also highlighted several impacts of this weather pattern:
• Glaciers may melt faster due to warm temperatures, raising the chances of increased river flow and Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs).
• Periods of hot and dry weather between rain spells may cause heat stress.
• Storms, hail, and strong winds could harm crops and damage infrastructure.
• Water accumulation in urban areas might lead to mosquito breeding and dengue outbreaks.
The PMD urges authorities and the public to stay alert and take precautionary measures during this active monsoon period.
