PMD Forecasts More Heavy Rains, Warns of Urban Flooding and Landslides

Islamabad, July 7, 2023 – Pakistan’s Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a forecast for heavy rains across several regions of the country, raising concerns about potential urban flooding and landslides.

The areas at highest risk include Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Attock, Gujranwala, Lahore, Sialkot, Sahiwal, Toba Tek Singh, Multan, Bahawalpur, Bahawalnagar, Okara, Kohat, Peshawar, Bannu, Karak, and D. I. Khan. Additionally, vulnerable areas such as Murree, Galliyat, Kashmir, Gilgit Baltistan, and hilly regions of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa could experience landslides.

The heavy rainfall may lead to flash flooding in hill torrents and local nullahs in Kashmir, D.G. Khan, Kohlu, Sibbi, Barkhan, Zhob, Loralai, Qilla Saifullah, and Musa Khel during this period.

The current synoptic situation is characterized by moist currents from the Bay of Bengal penetrating various parts of the country, while a westerly wave is affecting the upper and central regions.

For Friday, the Meteorological Department predicts more rain, wind, and thundershowers in Kashmir, Gilgit Baltistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Islamabad, Pothohar region, Punjab, northeast Balochistan, and Sindh. Isolated heavy falls are also expected in east/south Punjab, the Pothohar region, Kashmir, upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and northeast Balochistan during this period.

Moving to Saturday, similar weather conditions are anticipated with more rain, wind, and thundershowers expected in Kashmir, Gilgit Baltistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Islamabad, Pothohar region, Punjab, east/northeast Balochistan, and Sindh. Isolated heavy falls are likely in east/northeast Punjab, the Pothohar region, Kashmir, upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, northeast Balochistan, and central/lower Sindh.

In the past 24 hours, several regions experienced rain, wind, and thundershowers, with isolated heavy falls reported in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, Islamabad, the Pothohar region, Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, north Balochistan, and lower Sindh.

The Meteorological Department advises residents of the affected areas to stay alert and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety. Authorities are urged to remain prepared for any emergency situations arising from potential urban flooding, landslides, and flash floods.
