PMD Forecasts Snowfall in Upper KPK on January 12

Islamabad, January 11, 2024 – The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a weather forecast predicting snowfall in upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) on Friday, January 12, 2024.

According to the PMD’s report, mainly cold and dry weather is anticipated in most plain areas of the country, with very cold and partly cloudy conditions expected in northern parts and north Balochistan.

In specific regions, light rain and light snowfall over mountains are expected in upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Kashmir during the night. Additionally, dense fog and smog are likely to persist in the plain areas of Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and upper Sindh. Frost is also predicted to occur at a few places in Kashmir and the Pothohar region during the morning hours.

The PMD has issued an advisory cautioning citizens about the continuation of dense fog over the plain areas of Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and upper Sindh throughout the week. It advises citizens to exercise caution, especially during travel. Day temperatures are expected to remain below normal in most parts of Punjab due to the persistent dense fog.

As of Thursday, January 11, 2024, the weather outlook indicates mainly cold and dry conditions in most plain areas of the country, with very cold weather prevailing in northern parts and north Balochistan. Dense fog and smog are likely to persist in the plain areas of Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and upper Sindh.

Regarding the synoptic situation, the PMD notes that continental air is prevailing over most parts of the country, contributing to the prevailing cold and dry conditions.

Over the past 24 hours, the weather has been cold and dry in most parts of the country, with very cold conditions observed in northern parts and north Balochistan. Dense fog and smog have been prevalent over plain areas of Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and upper Sindh.

The recorded lowest minimum temperatures in various regions during this period are as follows: Leh at -11°C, Skardu at -10°C, Gilgit, Kalam, and Gupis at -06°C, Kalat, Astore, and Srinagar at -05°C, and Chitral, Dir, and Rawalakot at -03°C.
