PMD Forecasts Very Cold in Northern Areas on January 6

Islamabad, January 5, 2024 – The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a forecast warning of very cold weather in the northern areas of the country on Saturday, January 6, 2024.

In the weather report for the specified date, the PMD stated that predominantly cold and dry conditions are expected in most parts of the country, with particularly frigid temperatures anticipated in the northern regions and northern Balochistan.

The meteorological office highlighted the likelihood of dense fog and smog persisting in Islamabad, Punjab, upper Sindh, and the plain areas of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa. The PMD cautioned citizens to exercise caution due to the expected fog and smog conditions.

On Friday, January 5, 2024, the PMD reported that mainly cold and dry weather would prevail over most parts of the country. Dense fog and smog were predicted to persist in Islamabad, Punjab, upper Sindh, and the plain areas of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa. Additionally, cloudy weather with rain (snow over hills) was expected at isolated places in northeastern/lower Balochistan and upper Sindh.

The synoptic situation, according to the PMD, indicated the influence of a shallow westerly wave affecting Balochistan.

Over the past 24 hours, the weather was reported as cold and dry over most parts of the country, with very cold conditions prevailing in northern areas. Dense fog and smog persisted over the plain areas of Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, upper Sindh, and Islamabad. Meanwhile, rain, wind, and thunderstorm activities occurred at a few places in Balochistan and upper Sindh.

Notable rainfall measurements (in mm) during this period included Ormara 28, Kalat 18, Quetta (Sheikh Manda 15, Samungli 16), Pasni 07, Khuzdar 05, Jiwani 03, Dalbandin 02, Panjgur 01, Jacobabad 03, Padidan 02, and Khairpur 01.

The recorded lowest minimum temperatures (in °C) for the day were Leh -11, Skardu -09, Kalam, Gupis -05, Gilgit, Hunza, Astore, and Srinagar -03.
