Islamabad, May 16, 2025 – The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a heatwave alert for Sindh, predicting very hot and dry weather across most districts of the province on Saturday, May 17, 2025.
According to the PMD, the extreme weather conditions are expected to persist over the weekend, with temperatures likely to soar well above normal.
In its latest advisory, the PMD stated, “Very hot and dry weather is expected in most districts of Sindh on Saturday.” The same weather pattern was also observed on Friday night, with no significant relief in sight for the southern region. The ongoing heatwave is part of a broader national weather trend, with most parts of Pakistan experiencing extreme temperatures.
The PMD has warned that a severe heatwave will grip much of the country over the next three to four days. During this period, day temperatures in the upper regions — including central and upper Punjab, Islamabad, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan — are expected to remain 5°C to 7°C above normal from May 17 to 19. In the southern parts, including Sindh, southern Punjab, and Balochistan, temperatures are likely to stay 4°C to 6°C above average from May 17 to 20.
Synoptic Situation
The PMD has attributed the extreme heat conditions to a high-pressure system prevailing in the upper atmosphere, which is likely to persist for the next two to three days. This synoptic situation is contributing to the sustained rise in temperatures across the country.
Weather Outlook
On Saturday, the weather will remain hot and dry in most parts of Pakistan, with very hot conditions prevailing in the plains, including Sindh. No significant rainfall is expected, although isolated rain-wind/thunderstorms may occur in Kashmir and nearby hilly regions.
Temperature Highlights
Over the past 24 hours, very hot weather was reported in the plains, with maximum temperatures reaching alarming levels. Cities like Rahim Yar Khan, Jacobabad, and Turbat recorded highs of 48°C, while D.G. Khan, Nokundi, Dadu, and Sukkur in Sindh touched 47°C.
The PMD has urged the public, especially residents of Sindh, to take precautions against heat-related illnesses by staying hydrated, avoiding direct sunlight during peak hours, and monitoring local advisories.
