Islamabad, April 30, 2025 – The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a serious weather warning regarding potentially devastating thunderstorms expected to impact several regions of the country from May 1st to May 4th, 2025.
In its official weather advisory, the PMD cautioned that strong winds, thunderstorms, hailstorms, and lightning could cause significant damage to weak or exposed structures such as electric poles, solar panels, trees, and parked vehicles. Residents in vulnerable areas are advised to take safety precautions and secure outdoor items.
Weather Outlook and Synoptic Situation
According to the PMD, a westerly weather system is expected to enter the upper regions of Pakistan late Wednesday night. Additionally, moisture-laden winds from the Arabian Sea are forecast to penetrate upper areas of the country starting May 1. This combination of weather systems is likely to create unstable atmospheric conditions, triggering widespread thunderstorms.
Regional Forecasts
Wednesday:
Most regions of Pakistan will experience hot and dry conditions. However, thunderstorms with light rain are expected at isolated spots in northeast Balochistan and upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Thursday (May 1):
Unstable weather conditions will intensify. The PMD predicts wind-thunderstorm and rainfall in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pothohar region, Islamabad, northeast Punjab, Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan. In addition, isolated areas may experience hailstorms and heavy downpours.
Later in the evening and night, similar weather patterns are likely to affect southern Punjab, upper Sindh, and northeast Balochistan, where wind-thunderstorm activity is expected to increase.
Temperature Update
In the past 24 hours, most areas of Pakistan remained hot and dry, with extremely high temperatures recorded in central and southern regions. The PMD reported the highest temperatures in cities like Shaheed Benazirabad, Mohenjodaro, Sakrand, Sibbi (48°C), while Dadu, Jacobabad, Khairpur, Padidan, Mithi, and Khanpur registered temperatures of 47°C.
Public Advisory
The PMD urges the public, especially those living in rural or exposed areas, to remain alert during this period of heightened weather activity. With thunderstorms expected across various provinces, including urban centers, authorities are advised to take preemptive measures to minimize disruption and risk to life and property.
This wave of thunderstorms marks the beginning of a highly active weather phase for early May, and the PMD will continue to monitor and issue updates as conditions evolve.
