PMD Issues Cold Wave Warning Across Pakistan

Islamabad, December 12, 2024 – The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a warning regarding a persistent cold wave likely to affect most parts of the country. Citizens are advised to prepare for continued cold and dry conditions, especially in hilly areas, where temperatures are expected to drop significantly.

The PMD reported that continental air is prevailing over most regions of the country, contributing to the dry conditions. Additionally, a shallow westerly wave is currently impacting Gilgit-Baltistan, moving northeastwards, which may bring light rain and snow to some areas.

The PMD forecasts mainly cold and dry weather in most parts of the country. Hilly regions will experience very cold conditions, while isolated areas in Gilgit-Baltistan may see partly cloudy weather with light rain or snowfall.

On Friday, cold and dry weather is likely to persist across the country, with hilly areas remaining particularly chilly. The PMD has warned of frost formation in the morning hours in Islamabad, upper and central Punjab, and the plains of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Citizens in these regions should exercise caution during early morning travel.

During the past 24 hours, cold and dry weather dominated most parts of Pakistan, with hilly regions experiencing very cold conditions. Gilgit-Baltistan recorded isolated rain and snowfall, with notable figures including:

• Rainfall (mm): Skardu, Bagrote (03 mm), Bunji (02 mm), and Chilas (01 mm).

• Snowfall (inches): Astore (4 inches) and Skardu (1 inch).

The PMD also provided details on the lowest minimum temperatures recorded today. Leh experienced the coldest temperature at -9°C, followed by Kalam, Kalat, Ziarat, and Gopis at -6°C. Other notable temperatures included Quetta (-5°C), Skardu (-4°C), and Astore (-3°C).
