Islamabad, January 22, 2024 – The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a dense fog advisory for Tuesday, January 23, 2024, cautioning citizens in Islamabad, plain areas of Punjab, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, and upper Sindh to be vigilant while commuting.
The advisory comes as the PMD predicts the continuation of dense fog in these regions over the next few days, with below-normal day temperatures expected in most parts of Punjab.
According to the PMD, the synoptic situation reveals the prevalence of continental air over most parts of the country. Tuesday’s weather forecast anticipates very cold and dry conditions in most areas, with persistent dense fog and smog in Islamabad, plain areas of Punjab, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, and upper Sindh. The chilling weather is attributed to the ongoing dense fog.
On Monday, January 22, 2024, the country experienced predominantly very cold and dry weather, with dense fog and smog persisting in the aforementioned regions. The weather conditions led to very cold temperatures in these areas due to the lingering dense fog.
The past 24 hours saw cold and dry weather prevailing over most parts of the country, particularly in the northern regions where it was very cold. In contrast, rain occurred at a few places in Karachi. Dense fog and smog were reported in Islamabad, the Pothohar region, plain areas of Punjab, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, and upper Sindh.
The recorded lowest minimum temperatures in various parts of the country during this period were as follows: Leh at -12°C, Skardu at -11°C, Kalam at -07°C, Gilgit and Astore at -06°C, Gupis and Srinagar at -05°C, Kalat at -04°C, and Chitral, Hunza, Rawalakot, Quetta, and Mirkhani at -03°C.
As dense fog and smog continue to impact visibility and contribute to very cold conditions, the PMD urges citizens to exercise caution during their daily activities. The advisory serves as a reminder for motorists to use headlights, maintain a safe following distance, and adhere to speed limits to ensure road safety.
