Islamabad, October 31, 2025 – The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a drought alert for Balochistan, warning of worsening dry conditions due to below-normal monsoon rainfall across the province.
According to the PMD, Balochistan’s arid to semi-arid climate makes it particularly vulnerable to drought. The region often experiences extreme temperature variations, scarce rainfall, and extended dry spells. Southwestern and southern districts—receiving minimal summer monsoon influence—rely heavily on winter rainfall, which typically ranges between 71 and 231 millimeters annually.
Between May and October 2025, western and southwestern Balochistan recorded 79% below-normal rainfall, coupled with a sharp increase in consecutive dry days (CDD)—a key indicator of drought intensity. This deficit, the PMD cautioned, could trigger moderate to severe drought conditions in several parts of the province.
The seasonal outlook for November 2025 to January 2026 forecasts below-average rainfall and above-normal temperatures, potentially worsening the situation. Districts under the “Drought Watch” include Chagai, Gwadar, Kech, Kharan, Mastung, Nushki, Pishin, Panjgur, Qilla Abdullah, Quetta, and Washuk.
The PMD warned that ongoing dry conditions could lead to water stress in agricultural zones, affecting irrigation for Rabi crops and threatening livestock and livelihoods.
Key Anticipatory Actions
• Monitor drought trends and activate early warning systems.
• Identify vulnerable communities for targeted support.
• Promote water conservation techniques such as mulching and efficient irrigation.
• Strengthen livestock support programs, including veterinary and feed services.
The National Drought Monitoring and Early Warning Centre (NDMC) continues to monitor conditions closely. Farmers and planners are urged to stay updated via the PMD’s official website for timely forecasts and advisories.
