PMD issues earthquake alert for Karachi: mild tremors expected

Pakistan Independence Day 76

Karachi, June 4, 2025 – The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a fresh alert for the possibility of mild earthquakes in Karachi over the coming days. The department has urged residents to remain calm but stay alert.

Chief Meteorologist Amir Haider Laghari of the PMD said on Wednesday that Karachi is likely to experience more low-intensity tremors this week. However, he dismissed rumours about any major or high-intensity earthquakes striking the city soon.

“Historically, Karachi has witnessed earthquakes in the range of 5.5 to 5.8 magnitude,” Laghari explained in his statement. He further added that the recent tremors are being caused by movements along the Landhi fault line, which is currently undergoing natural geological adjustments.

The PMD emphasized that such mild quakes are common and occur frequently around the world. “Millions of small-scale earthquakes take place every day globally, and most go unnoticed,” Laghari noted.

He also clarified that predicting earthquakes is extremely difficult—even in advanced countries like Japan—and that no ordinary person or expert can predict exact timings or magnitudes of seismic events with certainty.

Over the past four days, Karachi has felt multiple mild earthquakes. According to the PMD’s Seismic Monitoring Centre, three new tremors were recorded last night, with magnitudes between 2.0 and 3.1. This brings the total number of tremors in Karachi to 26 since June 1.

The tremors have mostly been concentrated in areas like Landhi, Quaidabad, Malir, and nearby localities. Although the earthquakes have sparked anxiety among locals, the PMD confirmed that no major damage or injuries have been reported so far.

The PMD has advised citizens of Karachi to follow safety guidelines, stay informed through official weather and seismic updates, and avoid spreading unverified information or panic during this time.

Authorities continue to monitor seismic activity closely, urging Karachi residents to remain cautious, follow emergency protocols, and stay updated through official PMD channels.
