PMD issues fresh warning of flash floods in upper Pakistan

Pakistan Weather

Islamabad, August 17, 2025 – The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a fresh advisory warning of potential flash floods in several northern and central parts of the country, urging citizens to remain cautious and updated on the evolving weather situation.

According to the PMD, ongoing heavy rains may trigger flash floods in local nullahs and streams of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, Kashmir, the Potohar region, Dera Ghazi Khan, Koh-e-Suleman, and parts of northeastern Balochistan. In addition, the department cautioned that torrential downpours could cause urban flooding in low-lying areas of northeastern Punjab, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Peshawar, Nowshera, and southeastern Sindh.

The advisory also highlighted that landslides and mudslides could block major road links in hilly areas, particularly Murree, Galliyat, Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, and northern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Citizens, especially tourists and travelers, have been urged to avoid unnecessary journeys to vulnerable locations. The PMD further noted that strong winds, lightning, and heavy showers might damage fragile infrastructure such as kacha houses, electric poles, billboards, solar panels, and parked vehicles.

Synoptic situation: A seasonal low pressure lies over central Balochistan, while moist currents from the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal are penetrating both upper and southern regions of Pakistan. Additionally, a westerly wave is affecting northern areas, intensifying rainfall activity.

Weather outlook: On Sunday, partly cloudy conditions with rain, wind, and thunderstorms were recorded across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, Islamabad, Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, upper and southeastern Sindh, and parts of Balochistan. Isolated heavy falls occurred in the Potohar region, upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, northeastern Punjab, and northeastern Balochistan.

On Monday, similar weather patterns are expected with widespread thundershowers and possible heavy rainfall in upper Punjab, Kashmir, Potohar, and upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Recent weather report: In the past 24 hours, heavy rains lashed northeastern Punjab, parts of Sindh, Balochistan, Kashmir, and upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Islamabad received up to 76mm at Golra, while Rawalpindi’s Chaklala recorded 53mm. Tharparkar in Sindh also witnessed downpours, with Nagar Parkar receiving 50mm.

With temperatures soaring to 43°C in Nokundi, Dalbandin, Dadu, and Jacobabad, the PMD warned that the mix of heat and intense rainfall increases the risk of sudden flash floods, making vigilance essential across vulnerable regions.
