PMD issues fresh warning of thunderstorms across Sindh

Thudershower

Islamabad, September 8, 2025 – The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has sounded an alert for widespread thunderstorms across several districts of Sindh, warning that heavy downpours could trigger urban flooding, coastal flooding, and severe waterlogging in low-lying areas.

According to the advisory, strong weather activity is expected tonight and on September 9 in districts including Karachi, Hyderabad, Dadu, Thatta, Badin, Sajawal, Mirpurkhas, Shaheed Benazirabad, Tharparkar, Sukkur, Khairpur, and Larkana. The PMD cautioned that water levels in Hub Dam may rise significantly, while more rainfall in already flood-affected areas of Punjab and Sindh could worsen the humanitarian and infrastructural challenges.

The forecast also highlighted the risk of flash flooding in hill torrents of Dera Ghazi Khan, as well as parts of eastern and southern Balochistan, particularly around the Kirthar range near Dadu. Heavy thunderstorms, accompanied by windstorms and lightning, may cause damage to vulnerable structures, including Kacha houses, billboards, electric poles, and solar panels. Authorities have urged the public, travelers, and tourists to exercise caution, avoid unnecessary exposure, and remain updated on the latest weather developments.

Synoptic Situation

Meteorologists reported that a deep depression is currently positioned over southeast Sindh and is expected to move west-northwest in the next 24 to 36 hours. This weather system is channeling strong monsoon currents into the southern half of Pakistan. Additionally, a shallow westerly wave is influencing the upper and central regions of the country, further intensifying weather activity.

Forecast for Monday and Tuesday

The PMD predicts widespread rain, wind, and thunderstorms with scattered heavy falls across Sindh, central and southern Punjab, and parts of Balochistan. Meanwhile, northeast Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Kashmir are expected to experience partly cloudy skies with isolated rain and thundershowers.

Rainfall During the Past 24 Hours

In the last 24 hours, scattered rain and thunderstorms were reported across Punjab, Sindh, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, while Balochistan, Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan received light to moderate showers. The highest recorded rainfall was 85 mm in Jhang, followed by 77 mm in Multan City. In Sindh, Sakrand received 52 mm, Khairpur 50 mm, Badin 45 mm, Dadu 38 mm, and Karachi recorded 6 mm.

The highest maximum temperatures today were reported in Nokundi at 43°C and Dalbandin at 42°C.

The PMD has urged local administrations to remain vigilant, as the combination of heavy rainfall, strong winds, and lightning poses potential threats to life, infrastructure, and ongoing relief efforts in flood-stricken areas.
