PMD issues thunderstorm alert across multiple Punjab districts

Pakistan Weather

Islamabad, May 28, 2025 – The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a fresh weather advisory, warning of thunderstorm and potential hailstorms across various districts of Punjab over the next two days.

While the majority of Punjab is expected to remain hot and dry, several regions are likely to experience sudden changes in weather conditions.

According to the PMD’s forecast for Thursday, May 29, the weather will stay predominantly hot and dry across most districts of Punjab, with extremely high temperatures in the plains. However, isolated areas in northern and central Punjab may witness dust storms, rain, and thundershowers. Districts such as Rawalpindi, Murree, Galiyat, Attock, Chakwal, Jhelum, Mianwali, Khushab, Bhakkar, Sargodha, Hafizabad, Gujranwala, Gujarat, Mandi Bahauddin, Sialkot, Narowal, Sheikhupura, Lahore, Okara, Faisalabad, Jhang, Toba Tek Singh, Bahawalnagar, and Bahawalpur are all under PMD’s watch. Isolated incidents of heavy rainfall and hailstorm may also occur, potentially disrupting daily life.

The PMD also forecasted that for Wednesday night, hot and dry weather will persist in most of Punjab, but areas such as D.G. Khan, Rajanpur, Multan, Khanewal, and Bahawalnagar may receive rain coupled with windstorms and thunder.

In a nationwide alert, the PMD cautioned that the combination of windstorms, thundershowers, and lightning could damage fragile structures including electric poles, trees, solar panels, and vehicles during Thursday evening and Friday. The department emphasized that precautions should be taken, particularly in the vulnerable districts of Punjab where infrastructure might be impacted.

The synoptic situation indicates that a continental air mass currently dominates most of the country, while a new westerly wave is expected to enter the upper regions by Thursday. This weather pattern is anticipated to influence not only Punjab but also Islamabad, Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

During the past 24 hours, Punjab witnessed scattered thunderstorm activity in areas like Murree, Chakwal, D.G. Khan, and Attock. Murree recorded 14mm of rainfall while Islamabad Airport saw 8mm.

With extremely high temperatures and the possibility of abrupt weather changes, PMD has advised residents of Punjab to stay updated with official bulletins and remain cautious, particularly in areas prone to thundershowers and hail.
