PMD Issues Very Cold Alert for Murree on January 2, 2024

Islamabad, January 1, 2024 – The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a chilling weather alert for Murree on Tuesday, January 2, 2024.

The Met Office, in its latest report, stated that Murree and several other regions in Pakistan are expected to experience very cold and partly cloudy weather in the coming days.

According to the forecast, the regions likely to be affected include Murree, Galliyat, Gilgit, Kaghan, Naran, Skardu, Hunza, Chitral, Dir, Kalam, Malam Jabba, Rawalakot, Muzaffarabad, and Neelum Valley. The forecast spans from Tuesday to Thursday, with a possibility of light rain or snow in Gilgit, Chitral, Skardu, Hunza, and Kalam from Friday to Saturday. Additionally, Ziarat is expected to witness very cold and partly cloudy weather for the next three days.

The broader national weather report indicates that most parts of the country will experience mainly cold and dry conditions on Tuesday, January 2, 2024. However, the northern parts and north Balochistan are expected to face very cold temperatures. Dense fog and smog are likely to persist in the plain areas of Punjab, with fog and smog also anticipated in plain areas of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and upper Sindh during morning and night hours.

The PMD’s synoptic situation analysis reveals that continental air is prevailing over most parts of the country, contributing to the prevailing cold weather conditions.

Looking back at the past 24 hours, cold and dry weather dominated most parts of Pakistan, with the northern areas and northern Balochistan experiencing very cold temperatures. Dense fog and smog covered plain areas of Punjab during this period.

Recorded lowest minimum temperatures during this period include Leh at -10°C, Skardu at -09°C, Gilgit at -06°C, Gupis, Kalam, and Kalat at -05°C, and Astore and Srinagar at -04°C.

As the nation braces itself for the upcoming cold spell, authorities are urging residents, especially in the affected regions, to take necessary precautions. Drivers are advised to exercise caution on the roads, and residents are encouraged to stay indoors during extreme weather conditions.

The PMD will continue to monitor the situation and provide timely updates as needed to ensure public safety. As winter tightens its grip, it is essential for everyone to stay informed and prepared for the challenges that the harsh weather may bring.
