Islamabad, February 24, 2026 – The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has predicted that the new moon of Shawwal 1447 AH is unlikely to be sighted on the evening of March 19, 2026, corresponding to the 29th day of Ramazan 1447 AH. Based on these scientific calculations, Eid-ul-Fitr 2026 is expected to fall on March 21, 2026.

According to the Met Office, the new moon will be born at 06:23 Pakistan Standard Time (PST) on March 19. However, at various meteorological observatories across the country, the moon’s age at sunset is projected to be only 12 to 13 hours, which is considered too young for visibility. The PMD stated that, based on astronomical analysis, the chances of sighting the Shawwal moon on that evening are virtually non-existent.

The department clarified that this forecast is made purely on scientific and astronomical calculations. While it provides guidance to citizens, the official confirmation of the moon sighting and the commencement of Eid-ul-Fitr will be announced by the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee in accordance with traditional procedures.

This early prediction allows families, businesses, and institutions to plan for Eid celebrations, including shopping, travel, and religious observances, while waiting for the official announcement. PMD’s guidance ensures that communities can prepare in advance, maintaining harmony between scientific forecasts and religious observances.
