Islamabad, August 1, 2024 – The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecasted more thundershowers for Karachi on Friday, August 2, 2024. The PMD has issued a weather alert predicting rain, windstorms, and thundershowers for various regions, with some areas expecting heavy to very heavy falls.
In its detailed weather forecast, the PMD indicated that several areas in Sindh, including Karachi, Mithi, Sanghar, Umer Kot, Tharparker, Mirpur Khas, Khairpur, Mityari, Nausheroferoze, Jamshoro, Thatta, Badin, Chhor, Padidan, Sajawal, Hyderabad, Tando Allahyar, Tando Muhammad Khan, Shaheed Benazirabad, Sukkur, Larkana, Jacobabad, and Dadu, will experience rain and thundershowers. A few heavy to very heavy falls are also likely during this period.
The PMD also extended its weather forecast to cover the entire country, predicting intermittent rain, windstorms, or thundershowers in Kashmir, Islamabad, Punjab, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, Sindh, and northeastern/southeastern Balochistan. The forecast indicates that heavy to very heavy falls may occur in scattered places across these regions, including Islamabad, Punjab, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Sindh, eastern Balochistan, and Kashmir.
For Thursday, August 1, 2024, the PMD reported rain, windstorms, or thundershowers in Kashmir, Islamabad, Punjab, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, northeastern Balochistan, and lower Sindh. Heavy to very heavy falls were observed in Islamabad, upper/eastern Punjab, upper Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, northeastern Balochistan, and Kashmir.
In light of the forecasted heavy rains, the PMD has issued warnings about potential flash flooding in local nullahs and streams in several areas, including Murree, Galliyat, Mansehra, Kohistan, Chitral, Dir, Swat, Shangla, Buner, Bannu, Kurram, Waziristan, Dera Ismail Khan, Orakzai, Khyber, Mohmand, Nowshera, Swabi, Islamabad/Rawalpindi, Northeast Punjab, and the hill torrents of D.G Khan and Kashmir. The warning extends to Kalat, Khuzdar, Barkhan, Lasbella, Zhob, Loralai, Sibbi, Harnai, Awaran, Kohlu, Dera Bugti, Jhal Magsi, Naseerabad, Musa Khel, and Jaffarabad.
Urban flooding is also a concern for low-lying areas in Islamabad/Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Lahore, Sheikhupura, Kasur, Sialkot, Sargodha, Faisalabad, Multan, Sahiwal, Nowshera, and Peshawar from August 2-3, 2024. Similar warnings are issued for low-lying areas in Sindh. The PMD also cautioned about potential landslides that could cause road closures in vulnerable hilly areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Murree, Galliyat, Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan during the wet period.
Regarding the synoptic situation, the PMD noted that strong monsoon currents are continuously penetrating the upper and central parts of the country from the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal and are likely to extend to southern parts from the evening/night of August 2, 2024. Additionally, a westerly wave is expected to affect the northern parts of the country starting tomorrow.
In the past 24 hours, the weather across most parts of the country remained hot and humid, with rain, wind, or thundershowers occurring in upper/central Punjab, northeast Balochistan, upper Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, lower Sindh, and Kashmir. Notable rainfall measurements included Lahore (Airport 360mm, City 130mm), Gujranwala 129mm, Kasur 97mm, and Karachi (DHA 18mm, Faisal Base 17mm). The highest recorded maximum temperatures were in Nokkundi (46°C), Dalbandin (45°C), and Dadu (44°C).
