PMD Predicts Hot Weather Spell to Continue on June 14

ISLAMABAD, June 13, 2024 – The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecasted that the current hot weather spell will persist across most regions of the country on Friday, June 14, 2024.

According to the latest weather update, mainly hot and dry conditions are expected to dominate, with particularly intense heat in central and southern parts of Pakistan.

In its weather outlook for Friday, the PMD indicated that very hot temperatures would prevail, particularly affecting regions like Bhakkar, Nurpur Thal, Sibbi, Jacobabad, and other central and southern areas. However, the forecast also includes the possibility of partly cloudy weather accompanied by windstorms or thunderstorms, and occasional rain in specific areas during the evening or night. These areas include Gilgit-Baltistan, Kashmir, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Islamabad, and upper Punjab.

The synoptic situation described by the PMD indicates that continental air is predominantly affecting most parts of the country. Additionally, a shallow westerly wave is influencing the upper regions, which may contribute to isolated weather events such as thunderstorms or rain showers.

The weather for Thursday, June 13, 2024, has also been predominantly hot and dry across most parts of Pakistan. However, there were instances of partly cloudy weather with windstorms or thunderstorms in some regions. Isolated places in Gilgit-Baltistan, Kashmir, upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Islamabad, and upper Punjab experienced light rain or drizzle.

Over the past 24 hours, the country experienced hot and dry conditions, with the southern and central parts enduring extreme heat. Light rain or drizzle was recorded at isolated places in the Pothohar Region, upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Gilgit-Baltistan, with Dir recording 1mm of rainfall.

The highest maximum temperatures recorded today highlight the severe heatwave affecting various regions:

• Bhakkar and Nurpur Thal: 49°C

• Sibbi: 48°C

• Jacobabad: 47°C

• Mandi Bahauddin, Dadu, Gujranwala, DI Khan, Hafizabad, Jhang, Jhelum, Okara, and Narwal: 46°C

The PMD has advised the public to take necessary precautions to cope with the extreme heat, particularly in the affected central and southern regions. Residents are urged to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, and take appropriate measures to protect themselves from heat-related illnesses.
