PMD Predicts Thundershowers in Hilly Areas

Islamabad, September 4, 2024: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a weather forecast predicting thundershowers in various hilly regions of the country on Thursday, September 5, 2024.

This weather pattern is expected to bring some respite to the areas that have been enduring hot and dry conditions.

While most parts of Pakistan are set to experience continued hot and dry weather, the PMD has indicated that rain-wind and thundershowers are likely to occur in upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, and the adjoining hilly areas. The anticipated weather changes are attributed to a low-pressure area moving towards southeast Sindh and the presence of a shallow westerly wave over the upper regions of the country. These systems are interacting to create conditions conducive to precipitation in the specified areas.

On Wednesday, September 4, the PMD said scattered rain-wind and thundershowers were forecasted in southeastern Sindh, eastern and southern Punjab, the Pothohar region, southeastern Balochistan, upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, and nearby hilly regions. However, despite these forecasts, many areas remained under the influence of hot and dry weather, highlighting the uneven distribution of rainfall across the country.

Over the past 24 hours, various parts of the country, including southeastern Sindh, Punjab, lower Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, northeastern and southeastern Balochistan, and Gilgit-Baltistan, experienced rain-wind and thundershowers. The varying weather conditions underscore the transitional nature of the current season, with some areas beginning to see the effects of approaching weather systems, while others remain under the grip of summer heat.

According to the PMD the highest maximum temperatures recorded on Tuesday, September 3, underscored the ongoing heatwave in certain regions. Sibbi saw temperatures soar to 43 degrees Celsius, while Nokkundi and Dalbandin recorded highs of 40 degrees Celsius. These elevated temperatures are indicative of the persistent heat in the plains, contrasting sharply with the cooler, wetter conditions expected in the hilly areas.

The PMD’s forecast emphasizes the need for residents in the affected areas to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions in light of the predicted thundershowers. Staying informed through official weather updates and following any advisories issued by local authorities will be crucial in ensuring safety during this period of changing weather patterns.

As the weather systems continue to evolve, the PMD will provide regular updates to keep the public informed of any significant changes. Residents, particularly in the hilly regions, are advised to prepare for possible disruptions due to rain and thunderstorms, which may include localized flooding, slippery roads, and reduced visibility.
