PMD warns of rain, thunderstorms and heavy snowfall across northern Pakistan

Thudershower

Islamabad, December 12, 2025 – The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a fresh weather advisory, predicting rain, thunderstorms, and snowfall across northern and western regions of the country beginning Friday night.

The new weather pattern is linked to a shallow western disturbance approaching Pakistan, which is expected to influence conditions throughout the weekend.

According to PMD, light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms and snowfall over hilly areas is forecast in Chitral, Dir, Swat, Shangla, Kohistan, Malakand, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Haripur, Buner, Gilgit-Baltistan (including Diamir, Astore, Ghizer, Skardu, Hunza, Gilgit, Ghanche, and Shigar) and various districts of Kashmir from December 13 to 15, with intermittent breaks between spells.

In parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan—including Bajaur, Mohmand, Khyber, Orakzai, Kurram, Waziristan, Quetta, Ziarat, Zhob, Sherani, Chaman, Pishin, Qilla Abdullah, Qilla Saifullah and Nushki—partly cloudy to fully cloudy skies are anticipated, along with light rain or snowfall on December 14 and 15. PMD also forecasts chances of drizzle in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Peshawar and the Potohar region, with the possibility of light rain or snow in Murree and Galliyat on Sunday and Monday.

Dense fog is expected to intensify over Punjab, upper Sindh, and parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa from December 12 to 16, potentially disrupting travel. Meanwhile, PMD has warned that another, stronger western disturbance may impact northern and western Pakistan beginning December 19.

Possible Impacts:

Snowfall may lead to slippery roads and closures in mountainous regions such as Naran, Kaghan, Kalam, Malam Jabba, Chitral, Swat, and Quetta. Landslides are also possible in vulnerable zones of upper KP and Gilgit-Baltistan. Reduced visibility due to fog may disrupt motorway and highway traffic. Daytime temperatures are expected to fall sharply.

Authorities urge tourists, travelers, and farmers to plan activities carefully and follow updated advisories.
