Port Qasim Bustles with Shipping Activity on May 6, 2024

The Port Qasim Authority (PQA) released its latest shipping activity report on Monday, May 6, 2024, offering a glimpse into the bustling operations at Pakistan’s second-largest port.

The report, intended to facilitate stakeholders in the maritime trade sector, details vessel activity on Sunday, May 5th, 2024.

Seven ships arrived at Port Qasim on Sunday, each carrying a diverse range of cargo. The Maersk Nyassa, a prominent name in global container shipping, docked at the Container Terminal. Other arrivals included the Jessie, White Peach, and Clyde, which berthed at the Multi-Purpose Terminal, likely carrying general cargo or project materials.

For the energy sector, the Gaslog Geneva, a Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) carrier, arrived at the Elengy Terminal, signifying Pakistan’s ongoing reliance on imported LNG to meet its energy demands. Additionally, the Ullswater, likely transporting Motor Gasoline (MOGAS) for domestic fuel consumption, docked at the Oil Terminal. The Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) also received its share of supplies, as the LPG carrier African Loon arrived at the dedicated Sui Southern Terminal.

Beyond containerized and liquid cargo, Port Qasim also caters to bulk cargo movement. The report mentions the arrival of the vessel “White Peach” at the Multi-Purpose Terminal, which could be carrying cement, a crucial building material for Pakistan’s ongoing infrastructure development projects. Similarly, the African Loon, besides LPG, might also be transporting coal, a vital source of fuel for power generation in the country.

The report further highlights the dynamic nature of port operations. While seven ships arrived on Sunday, the PQA also witnessed departures. The Maersk Nyassa and Gaslog Sydney, having completed their cargo handling activities, set sail earlier today. Additionally, another grain carrier, the Majestic Noor, is scheduled to depart this afternoon, indicating the continuous movement of essential food supplies through Port Qasim.

Cargo movement statistics paint a picture of a port actively facilitating international trade. A total of 186,619 tonnes of cargo were handled at the port in the last 24 hours. This impressive volume comprised 147,691 tonnes of imports, catering to Pakistan’s diverse needs, and 38,928 tonnes of exports, showcasing the country’s contribution to the global marketplace. Notably, these goods were efficiently transported in 3,931 containers, highlighting the prevalence of containerized cargo movement, a hallmark of modern maritime trade.

Looking ahead, the report anticipates the arrival of the container ship MSC Archemidis at the Qasim International Container Terminal (QICT) later today. This vessel’s arrival signifies the continuous flow of containerized cargo, a vital segment of global trade handled efficiently by Port Qasim.

The PQA’s shipping activity report serves as a valuable resource for stakeholders in the maritime trade sector. It provides insights into the port’s operations, cargo movement trends, and vessel activity, allowing businesses to plan their logistics activities effectively. With its strategic location and efficient operations, Port Qasim remains a crucial gateway for Pakistan’s trade, contributing significantly to the country’s economic growth and development.
