PRA steps up enforcement against businesses violating electronic invoicing rules, issuing notices and fines across Punjab.
LAHORE: The Punjab Revenue Authority (PRA) has stepped up enforcement against businesses violating the Electronic Invoice Monitoring System (E-IMS), serving notices to more than 70 hotels, restaurants and marquees across the province in the past two days.
According to a PRA spokesperson, enforcement officers have also fined several restaurants that continued to breach E-IMS requirements despite receiving notices.
The digital system aims to improve transparency in business transactions, strengthen tax monitoring and ensure accurate documentation of sales. Businesses meeting the prescribed sales threshold are required to issue electronic receipts through the E-IMS.
Under the system, sales and tax records of integrated businesses are monitored digitally, while customers must receive computerised and verifiable receipts after making payments.
The PRA said the system enables authorities to compare sales declared in tax returns with corresponding tax collection records. This will help identify discrepancies in reported business activity and tax payments while improving overall compliance.
The Authority warned that businesses continuing to violate E-IMS requirements after receiving notices would face further legal action.
The PRA spokesperson said safeguarding tax paid by consumers remained the Authority’s primary responsibility, adding that heavy penalties were being imposed on businesses involved in fraudulent practices.
The latest crackdown reflects the PRA’s growing reliance on digital monitoring and electronic documentation to strengthen tax compliance, curb evasion and protect government revenue.
