Price stability gains ground despite global turmoil: Ahsan Iqbal

National

Islamabad, April 24, 2026 – Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Ahsan Iqbal said Pakistan is witnessing a gradual trend of price stability despite ongoing regional and global economic challenges.

Chairing a meeting of the National Price Monitoring Committee, the minister highlighted that fertilizer prices have remained stable even amid international market pressures, reflecting the effectiveness of government policies. He noted that coordinated efforts between federal and provincial authorities are contributing to improved price trends of essential commodities across the country.

Officials informed the committee that transport fares have remained unchanged, while poultry prices have dropped back to pre-conflict levels, providing some relief to consumers. However, the minister emphasized the need for long-term stability in the poultry sector, stressing the importance of developing a modern cold chain infrastructure to minimize price fluctuations and ensure consistent supply.

Iqbal directed relevant authorities to submit detailed proposals on cold chain development within five days, signaling urgency in addressing supply chain inefficiencies.

The meeting also raised concerns about the availability of substandard ghee and other food products in rural markets. The minister called for strict enforcement of quality standards to protect consumers and prevent the distribution of unsafe food items.

He urged both federal and provincial institutions to remain vigilant against artificial shortages and ensure adequate supply of essential goods. The role of the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics was also acknowledged for its effective price monitoring and data management, which supports informed policymaking.

The committee reaffirmed the government’s commitment to maintaining price stability and strengthening market oversight to safeguard public interest.
