Prince William and Princess Kate’s latest royal engagement brought back emotional and painful memories as the couple spoke candidly about their recent experiences with hospitals.
During a joint visit to Charing Cross Hospital on Thursday, January 8, the Prince and Princess of Wales addressed NHS staff and volunteers, highlighting the vital role healthcare workers play in patients’ lives. The visit marked their first official royal engagement of 2026.
Speaking directly to hospital staff, Prince William made a rare and heartfelt reference to Princess Kate’s recent cancer battle. “Both of us have had different experiences with hospitals,” he said. “Me working with the air ambulance, Catherine with her recent health journey, and coming here today reminds us just how important all the teams are — the staff and the patients.”
The future king emphasized the importance of supporting healthcare professionals, praising the dedication of NHS workers and the strong bond between patients and carers. “It’s so heartwarming, and it’s so important that we acknowledge and appreciate everything that goes on in the NHS,” William added.
Princess Kate, who turns 44 this week, also showed quiet solidarity with her husband. While speaking with volunteers who support chemotherapy patients, she gently touched William’s arm and said, “We know,” after hearing how loved ones often remain by patients’ sides for hours.
The hospital visit came just days before the anniversary of Kate’s cancer remission announcement last year, making the engagement especially meaningful for the couple.
