Islamabad, March 5, 2026: Pakistan is set to witness a historic development in mountain tourism and rescue operations as private helicopter services are expected to become operational for the first time by April–May 2026, according to Major General (Retd) Irfan Arshad, President of the Alpine Club of Pakistan.

In an exclusive interview with Associated Press of Pakistan, Arshad highlighted that the initiative would improve accessibility to high-altitude regions and strengthen rescue capabilities for climbers and trekkers. “So far, only military aviation has provided helicopter services, mostly limited to rescue missions,” he explained.

The absence of private helicopter operators had long restricted tourism, logistics, and mountaineering expeditions in Pakistan’s northern peaks. Arshad noted that countries like Nepal have developed a thriving private helicopter sector, with 13 companies operating anywhere from two to ten helicopters each.

Arshad emphasized that private operators will be permitted for both rescue and tourism activities, with some government institutions also offering services commercially. “The initiative will not only enhance rescue operations but also introduce safaris to iconic peaks like K2, Broad Peak, and Nanga Parbat,” he added.

The project has already received strong support from the government and the armed forces, and foreign companies have expressed interest in joining. Experts predict that the launch of private helicopter services will make Pakistan’s mountains more accessible to international tourists and mountaineers, opening new opportunities for adventure tourism in the country.
