Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has announced a nationwide restriction on SIM sales during late-night hours as part of its efforts to strengthen telecom security and stop the illegal issuance of SIM cards in Pakistan.
According to the latest press release issued on May 19, 2026, the telecom regulator has directed all Cellular Mobile Operators (CMOs) to suspend SIM sales from 12:00 AM to 6:00 AM across the country. The move is aimed at improving regulatory compliance and preventing unauthorized SIM activation.
SIM Sales Suspended From Midnight to 6AM
Under the new PTA directives, all authorized SIM sale channels, including franchises and retailers, must strictly follow the prescribed timings for SIM issuance and sales.
The authority warned that any violation of these instructions will result in strict legal and regulatory action under applicable telecom laws and regulations. PTA emphasized that all telecom operators and retail partners are required to fully comply with the new policy.
The decision is part of PTA’s broader campaign to curb the misuse of illegally issued SIMs and ensure a safer telecom ecosystem in Pakistan.
PTA Advises Citizens to Buy SIMs From Authorized Outlets
PTA has also advised the public to purchase SIM cards only from authorized franchises and retailers during permitted business hours. Consumers have been instructed to ensure biometric verification is completed before activating any SIM card.
The telecom regulator stressed that biometric verification remains a critical requirement to prevent fraud, illegal activities, and misuse of mobile connections.
Citizens were further encouraged to report violations related to illegal SIM sales through PTA’s Complaint Management System (CMS), PTA CMS App, PTA Digital Assistant on WhatsApp (0315-0055055), or the toll-free helpline 0800-55055.
PTA Says Move Will Improve Telecom Security
According to PTA, the latest restriction reflects its commitment to protecting consumers and maintaining transparency within Pakistan’s telecom sector.
The authority stated that the initiative will help reduce unauthorized SIM issuance, strengthen national security measures, and improve trust in the country’s digital communication network.
