Apple is reportedly preparing a major artificial intelligence upgrade for iPhone and iPad users with the upcoming iOS 27 and iPadOS 27 updates. Ahead of WWDC 2026,
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman revealed several new features expected to arrive later this year, including a standalone Siri chatbot app similar to ChatGPT and Claude.
Apple has already confirmed that WWDC 2026 will begin on June 8, where the company is expected to showcase its next-generation software updates and AI tools.
Standalone Siri App Could Compete With ChatGPT
According to the report, Apple is developing a completely separate Siri application that will function like modern AI chatbot platforms such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude.
The standalone Siri app is expected to become a central hub for completing multiple tasks, handling conversations, and offering intelligent assistance across Apple devices. The chatbot will reportedly store past conversations, support auto-deleting chats, and remain free from advertisements.
The move signals Apple’s growing push into generative AI as competition intensifies in the global tech industry.
Apple Focuses on Privacy and AI Security
The report also claims Apple delayed some of its AI assistant features due to concerns surrounding user privacy and data security. Apple is said to be prioritizing on-device processing and private cloud computing to protect user information.
However, for more advanced AI tasks, Google Gemini may reportedly handle the heavy processing. This means certain complex AI requests could rely on Google’s infrastructure while Apple continues to manage core user privacy protections.
Apple’s upcoming Siri assistant is expected to run on Apple Foundation Models combined with Google-powered AI capabilities.
New AI Writing Tools Coming to iPhone and iPad
iOS 27 is also rumored to introduce upgraded AI writing tools across the system. These features may offer smarter grammar correction, writing suggestions, and text improvements beyond the current Apple Intelligence tools.
Apple is reportedly testing a new “Write With Siri” option above the keyboard, allowing users to quickly receive AI-powered writing help. Users may also be able to approve or reject suggested edits and move through highlighted text changes easily.
Shortcuts and Photos App Getting AI Upgrades
Apple is further expected to redesign the Shortcuts app with natural language support, enabling users to create automations using simple prompts.
The Photos app may also receive new AI editing tools and AI-generated wallpaper options as Apple continues expanding artificial intelligence features across its ecosystem.
