PTA clarifies mobile tariff rules, boosts service quality nationwide

Pakistan Telecom Authority

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has addressed recent concerns circulating on social media regarding mobile tariffs, service standards, and unauthorized deductions, reaffirming its commitment to protecting telecom consumers across Pakistan.

In an official statement, PTA highlighted the implementation of the Mobile Tariff Regulations, 2025, designed to establish a structured and fair pricing framework for mobile services. Under these regulations, operators classified as having Significant Market Power (SMP) must obtain prior approval from PTA before introducing or revising tariffs. Other telecom operators may set prices based on business strategies, but PTA retains the authority to intervene if pricing structures negatively affect consumers.

The authority emphasized that while safeguarding consumer interests remains a priority, maintaining sustainable market conditions is equally essential. Pakistan continues to offer some of the most affordable mobile data rates in the region, with one of the lowest Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) levels, ensuring widespread accessibility of telecom services.

To further improve service quality, PTA confirmed that a nationwide spectrum auction is scheduled for March 2025. The initiative is expected to drive significant investment from telecom operators in acquiring new spectrum and expanding advanced network infrastructure. These developments are projected to enhance network coverage, improve call quality, and deliver faster mobile internet speeds for users nationwide.

Addressing concerns about unauthorized charges, PTA has directed all mobile operators to obtain explicit prior consent from subscribers before activating any Value-Added Services. Consumers are encouraged to regularly review and manage their active subscriptions through official mobile operator applications to avoid unwanted deductions.

PTA reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring a transparent regulatory environment that balances consumer protection with the long-term growth and sustainability of Pakistan’s telecom sector.

Consumers experiencing service issues or billing disputes can file complaints through PTA’s toll-free helpline at 0800-55050 or via the official online Complaint Management System.
