PTA Conducts QoS Survey in 19 Cities, Railway Routes

Pakistan Telecom Authority

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has released the results of its latest Quality of Service (QoS) survey, conducted in 19 cities across the country during the second quarter of 2025, to assess the performance of Cellular Mobile Operators (CMOs).

In a groundbreaking move, PTA also carried out its first-ever QoS survey along two of Pakistan’s busiest railway corridors — Lahore-Rawalpindi and Peshawar-Rawalpindi. These routes, vital for intercity travel, serve thousands of passengers daily. The initiative aims to evaluate and enhance mobile voice and data connectivity for travelers who rely on mobile networks for communication, work, and entertainment during transit.

The survey was conducted using mobile handsets in auto-detect technology mode to perform voice calls, SMS tests, and mobile broadband/data sessions. A state-of-the-art automated QoS monitoring and benchmarking system was deployed to measure compliance with the Next Generation Mobile Service (NGMS) licenses and the Cellular Mobile Network QoS Regulations, 2021. The railway corridors were specifically chosen for their strategic importance and high passenger volume.

Based on the compliance levels for each Key Performance Indicator (KPI), as measured against the thresholds defined in the licenses and QoS regulations, CMOs were ranked from first to fourth position in the categories of Mobile Network Coverage and Voice Services. For Mobile Broadband Speed, rankings were determined based on download/upload speeds, network latency, and webpage loading times.

Following the survey, PTA issued directives to CMOs, instructing them to take corrective measures to meet regulatory standards and improve overall service quality. The detailed survey results are now available on PTA’s official website for public review.

PTA reaffirmed its commitment to nationwide quality monitoring through continuous field assessments, aimed at ensuring better mobile services for users and fostering healthy competition among mobile network operators.
