PTA Cracks Down on Illegal SIM Issuance, Arrest Made

Pakistan Telecom Authority

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has ramped up its efforts against the illegal issuance of SIM cards.

A raid conducted by the PTA’s Zonal Office in Lahore, in collaboration with the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) Cyber Crime Circle, Lahore, targeted a Telenor franchise in Kot Addu. The franchise was allegedly involved in the unauthorized issuance of SIM cards.

During the operation, authorities seized 166 fingerprints, one mobile phone, and a laptop, all of which were believed to be used in the illegal SIM activation process.

One individual was arrested on-site, and an FIR was immediately registered against the accused. The confiscated items will be used as evidence as the FIA continues to investigate the case.

This raid followed a formal complaint filed by the PTA Zonal Office Lahore, which had raised concerns about illegal SIM activations being carried out through the franchise’s sales channels. The FIA is now pursuing further leads to dismantle this illegal operation and potentially uncover more people involved.

The PTA’s crackdown is part of a broader initiative aimed at combating the unlawful distribution of SIM cards across the country.

The illegal activation of SIMs is a growing concern in Pakistan, as it is often linked to various cybercrimes, including identity theft, fraud, and even terrorism.

By tightening regulations and conducting operations like this, the PTA aims to curb such illegal activities and maintain the security of the telecommunications network.

This latest raid underscores the PTA’s commitment to eliminating the illegal SIM market and ensuring that SIM issuance is strictly regulated. The authority remains dedicated to upholding the integrity of the country’s telecom sector while working closely with law enforcement agencies to protect citizens from the potential risks associated with illegal SIMs.

The PTA’s latest raid on a Telenor franchise involved in illegal SIM issuance highlights the authority’s ongoing efforts to secure Pakistan’s telecommunications sector. By collaborating with the FIA and taking swift action against offenders, the PTA reinforces its commitment to preventing illegal activities that threaten public safety and cybersecurity.

This operation serves as a strong message to those involved in unlawful SIM distribution that stringent measures will be taken to protect the integrity of the network and the security of citizens.
