PTA Issues Advisory Urging Responsible Use of Social Media

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has issued a fresh public advisory urging citizens to exercise responsibility and caution while using social media platforms.

The warning comes amid growing concerns over the spread of illegal, misleading, and defamatory content online, which authorities say can harm individuals, institutions, and national integrity.

In an official statement released on January 15, 2026, the PTA advised all social media users to strictly refrain from creating, uploading, sharing, or disseminating content that is unlawful, hateful, defamatory, or misleading. The regulator emphasized that such material must be removed immediately once identified and warned users against engaging in online narratives that could undermine the country’s unity or damage the dignity of individuals and state institutions.

According to the PTA, irresponsible digital behavior not only disrupts social harmony but also exposes users to serious legal consequences. The authority highlighted Section 20 of the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) 2016, under which knowingly spreading false information that harms someone’s reputation or violates personal privacy is considered a criminal offense. Individuals found guilty under this law may face penalties, including fines and imprisonment.

The advisory underscores that freedom of expression carries legal and ethical responsibilities. While social media platforms provide users with the ability to share opinions and information instantly, the PTA stressed that misuse of these platforms can have far-reaching consequences. The regulator urged users to verify information before sharing it and to avoid amplifying unverified or sensational content.

PTA also reminded the public that online content is closely monitored in accordance with national laws. Content that promotes hatred, misinformation, or defamation may be reported, investigated, and acted upon under existing cybercrime regulations. The authority encouraged citizens to report unlawful content through official channels instead of engaging with or spreading it further.

In its concluding remarks, the PTA stated that responsible digital conduct is a collective civic obligation. By promoting ethical online behavior, users can contribute to a safer, more respectful digital environment that protects individual rights and supports national stability.

The advisory serves as a timely reminder for social media users across Pakistan to remain mindful of the legal framework governing online activity and to use digital platforms in a constructive and responsible manner.
